It was in a dance school at the foot of the Doenrade plateau in the Netherlands where this peculiar figure first took shape. Created by musicians Yves Lennertz and Kees Berkers, Yin Yin was born from the fusion of 1960s and '70s Southeast Asian music with disco, electronic, funk, and world music. They chose the name Yin Yin, referring to the darker aspect of Taoist philosophy repeated twice, rather than balanced by its opposite Yang. It represents a creative space born from imbalance, like the unbridgeable gap between two magnets of the same polarity.
The hypnotic power of Yin Yin has already traveled far and wide across the globe, surpassing physical and spiritual boundaries and connecting those fortunate enough to experience them with an entire ancestral movement otherwise unimaginable. On Friday, September 13, Poplar will be the next stop: the world you didn't yet know will unfold from here.
